A SATTVIC economy can satisfy our drive for more within planetary limits
In my upcoming book The Frugal Economy, I show how to build a SATTVIC (balanced) economy that harmonizes:
- the RAJAS : the human drive to “do more” ⊕ and “be better” and
- the TAMAS : the ecological imperative to “use less” resources ⊖
The Sattva, Rajas, Tamas form the three Gunas, or qualities (ways) of life (Read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guṇa)
When I grew up in India, the Gunas were introduced to me using either:
- a hierarchical perspective (the Sattva is “superior” to Rajas and Tamas)
- a Manichaean worldview (the Sattva is “pure and good” whereas Tamas is “dark and evil”)
It’s only since 2007, when I had a spiritual rebirth in Silicon Valley after a burnout, that I began challenging this “orthodox” view of the Gunas that I inherited from my childhood in India.
My Western yoga teachers helped me reframe the 3 Gunas and view them as *synergistic* and *symbiotic*.
For instance, here is how Yoga Journal frames the 3 Gunas:
“Tamas provides our foundation; Rajas gives it vitality and breath; Sattva imbues it with consciousness and compassionate awareness.” (Source: https://tinyurl.com/4hh65x9k )
In my new book The Frugal Economy, I show how we can *consciously* harness and harmonize the positive energies of Tamas and Rajas to build a Sattvic socio-economic system that boosts the vitality of people and places and regenerates our planet while reducing CO2 emissions and use of resources.
