Multiple intelligences will make you more efficient. Only wisdom will make you more effective
According to the World Economic Forum, future employees need to possess 3 new skills to be successful in the AI-driven, climate-impacted, digitally-enhanced job market:
- Carbon intelligence
- Virtual intelligence
- Artificial intelligence
Read the WEF article to learn about these 3 intelligences.
But, as my coauthor Prasad Kaipa and I explain in our book From Smart to Wise, intelligence (smartness) alone is no longer enough for managers to be effective as leaders.
Upgrading your skillset from ONE intelligence to MULTIPLE intelligences will make you more EFFICIENT but not more EFFECTIVE.
In our book, we define Practical Wisdom (what the ancients Greeks called ‘phronesis’) as:
“Wisdom is the ability to modulate your intelligence(s) with ethics and humility to serve a higher purpose”
Wise Leadership is the ability to use discernment to know why and how to apply ALL FORMS of intelligence ethically to maximize societal and ecological impact.
Here are 2 use cases that show why more intelligence doesn’t lead to more wisdom:
1) Businesses can use the 3 intelligences to just make more PROFIT and generate no societal impact.
2) America as a nation could cultivate these 3 intelligences to DOMINATE international markets and maintain its global supremacy.
These 2 use cases show that without wisdom, developing these 3 intelligences won’t serve the Greater Good.
The Era of SMART leaders — endowed with *umpteen* intelligences, like the Hindu character Ravana with 10 heads — is coming to an end.
The Epoch of WISE Leaders — endowed with a *single* most important human quality: wisdom — is emerging
Intelligence was the foundation of the 20th Industrial Civilization.
Wisdom will be the foundation of the 21st century Conscious Civilization.
